Anyone on here know the year or date when Cooey model 64 switched to metal magazines from plastic? Trying to date my Cooey 64 with plastic magazine. Mine is a deluxe and has sling swivels, white butt stock spacer, checkering with rabbit, but “no grip cap”. 🤷🏻
Also is there a book on the Cooey model 64 and model 60 ?

Thanks in advance!

Fancy!

The only documentation I know about is a booklet - very nearly a pamphlet - that covers the Cooey story. Thirty-two pages long, and scant little mention of the 64 specifically.

Hopefully someone here at the Hive Mind will have some more useful info than that.

The Cooey 64 was designed by the son of the founder but was not marketed till after Winchester bought out Cooey.
There was a transition period, in which there were no serial numbers on the rifles as it was not mandated by law.
After 1968, serial numbers were required, check your rifle.
I have never seen a Cooey 64 with a stock such as yours, with a plastic magazine, all are metal.
When dealing with Cooey's, anything is possible.

Thank you Bill. I have a general knowledge of the Cooey 64 and know the first couple years made they came with the plastic magazine. Was mostly interested in the catalog descriptions. Appreciate the reply.

I have the first model 64 looks the same . It has the new magazine well and clip now. The also have the B model that came with the factory metal clip also. Is also the Savage made one floating around also, Plastic mags are worth as much as the gun now.

Just a suggestion - if you wish to shoot the rifle regularly, get the parts to convert to use metal magazines. You don't want to wear out the plastic one. Very hard to replace. Installation of the conversion parts requires no permanent alterations to the rifle.

64A had plastic mags and 64B had metal mags. Correct? I have an early version that was given to me by a friend but it came with no mag. i priced converting it but iirc, it was more than half thr cost of a new savage 64 so, in the safe she sits.

I don’t plan on shooting this one with it in pristine condition, so I’m going to leave it original with the plastic magazine. And my buddy told me he had a spare plastic magazine for me which is mint condition, and I can have it for free.

Some people I know have the opinion that people should not be allowed to vote in Canada if they do not own a Lee Enfield. After seeing this post and thinking about the role of Cooeys in Canadian shooting culture, I would amend that opinion to say, no one in Canada should be allowed to vote unless they have a Lee Enfield or a Cooey. Thoughts? Winky face of mirth ;)
