Cooey 64 Not feeding well

Hey folks,

Anybody have any ideas on getting this little gun to feed? It's old, I have taken it apart, cleaned it up, polished the bolt, fixed what I can, but it will not feed consistently, from 3 different mags.
I have tried several brands of ammo with the same results.

I'm thinking it may be the mag springs have gotten weak? I had a few today where the round was not getting pushed up evenly and jammed against the bolt face and breach.

If anyone has had similar experiences and a fix, I would appreciate it.

Don't know if there is a fix. Lol. I've found the federal 525 round packs work the best with mine. I cut the recoil spring down a bit probably need to go more. There are two springs there if you try this. The outside one is the "hammer" spring the inside one is the recoil spring I believe. Mag pressure on bolt also seems to be a problem you'll notice it won't feed well with 10 rounds in the mag but may feed with 5. That's about all the help I can be.
 
Fixed mine by changing the angle of the magwell so that it tilts ever so slightly up at the front. Carefully filed a small amount from the top/front of the magwell.

Don't know if this is your problem, but remove the magwell and check for extra flashing on the mating surface.
 
I adore the 64. These can be finicky eaters...
-Cleaning is important, but run it dry. Lube for storage/rust prevention.
-Magazines... Original PLastic can be migraine causing, and pot metal magazines wear out. Savage still makes new magazines, and usually found under $30.
-try a few different types of ammo. Mine hate winchester, but love Blasers, Chamions, AE, and a few more...other's have better success with Winchester. Generally speaking solid, round nosed ammo pass through well
-Cleaning is important (stated twice because you'll want/have to do it every 500-1000 rds.
 
Could the mag. catch arrangement be worn, allowing the magazines to drop slightly? Will it feed if the mag. is held into the rifle?
A brand new Savage magazine would be worth trying.
 
And check the barrel alignment.
There izz a wee bit of rwiggle room and it could be cant'titted 'nuff to
mess things up.
And don't over tighten the hold down screw.

And as tiriaq mentioned, sometimes a new magazeen helps things along nicely.
 
A year or so ago I bought a Savage mag for my 64b and was having feeding problem right off the bat. I took a flat file and gave the mag lips 2 or 3 light strokes. Solved the problem. Seemed to me the new mag wasn't sitting flush with the picker upper. LOL
I only shoot American Eagle ammo in mine after having problems with other brands.
 
I've had good luck changing the mag well angle slightly by adding a washer between the rear of the mag well and the receiver. There are 2 screws that hold the mag well down, stick a washed around the rear screw, between the mag well tab and the receiver.
 
Great feedback everyone! Thanks for the tips. I will have a look at a new mag, and check those other areas pointed out. I know I just cranked the screws down after re-assembly, so I will look at backing those of a touch. I see at least I'm not the only one who has had issues. When it shoots it shoots straight at least!
