Cooey 64 recoil spring guide

Have a question for you guys:

Is the guide rod for the recoil spring supposed to be pressed iinto the bolt or shout it be a sliding fit? I see that the newer savages are able to come apart, but not sure about the older cooeys. When the bolt is out of the rifle the hammer and springs are still held together firmly.

I'm trying to diagnose why i'm getting so many failure to ejects and short cycling. Just picked it up and want to get it sorted out because I like how it handles.

The older model 64s are pressure fitted. The bolt stays in one piece.Failure to extract are caused by a worn extractor...failure eo eject is a worn or broken ejector...there are 2 types....one is wire and the other is flat steel. Short cycling can be caused by dirty bolt and chamber or poor ammo. Many problems with my 7 cooey 64s when using federal ammo...Winchester ..no problems with solids but only the 333 hollow points seemed to cycle thru them. Each gun seeks its own particular ammo it likes.

Thanks WT, I figured as much since the end of the guide rod is knurled to bump up the diameter and then pressed in. I've religiously cleaned it and will try it out again today. The ejector is the stamped steel type, it still looks pretty good but I don't have another one to compare to. So far I have had zero problems chambering and extracting, just ejecting. I'm leaning toward the short stroking and ejection problems being related, going to try more powerful ammunition.
