Here's little story I've been meaning to share;

So, I took the old Cooey 64B out for some plinking last weeknd... It was the first gun I had ever shot way back when, as a young boy.... and was likely responsible for kindling my love for firearms...

Before taking it out, I took it apart and gave it a good cleaning. I remember it used to be notorious for jamming up... And now I know why. I dont think it had been cleaned... EVER. The bolt woulnt even fall out, I had to push it out... There was old gummed up oil, grease, and even pine neddles in there... She cleaned up real nice and everything checked out ok...

So out I go, load up the magazine, line up my target, pull the trigger, and I hear "PUP"... sounds like a bad round (though I THOUGHT I saw an empty case eject) A friend was close by, and we looked at each other, he agreed it didnt sound right... so I dropped the mag, waited, and opened the action... There was a round there, no firing pin mark,,, hmmm.

Try it again... I hear "PUP" and this time I am SURE I saw a empty case eject. I try one more... "PUP" and "PING" as it hit the steel target I was shooting at... Well I'll be jiggered.... She WAS firing, it just sounded like bad rounds.

So "PUP, PUP, PUP, PUPPUPPUP" .... She was cycling like a hot damn... Stood up and my friend comes over and says whats up??! Whys it so quiet?

You know, I honestly dont remember it being that quiet... maybe my hearing was better when I was a kid (actually I'm sure it was, between loud music, loud cars and trucks, guns, and my wife constantly nagging at me, no wonder) I have had a bolt action .22 for some time now, and it has a very sharp "CRACK" to it when it goes off... This old Cooey is like an air rifle! I havnt shot a semi auto .22 in some time, but are they usually this quiet?

My first thought was, maybe the old girl is just worn out, and there isnt as much pressure behind the round as there should be??? Or is it just the semi auto action eating up some of the pressure... I honestly dont think she ever had that many rounds through her... I would actually guess less than 1000... But would almost be confident saying less than 500 rounds in its lifetime. (my granfather was quite stingy when it came to plinking) 50 rounds was LOTS to him.

Either way, it kind of gave me a warm feeling inside... Shooting that old gun again, so many years later.... I can still remember the first day I climbed up to the bench at the range, and my grandfather passing that Cooey to me, patiently watching over me as I shot for the first time. It was such an honour as a kid to be allowed to shoot "A real gun" instead of the Cap gun I packed around.

I dont think I'll take her out often... but maybe every now and then when I'm thinking of him, I'll take her out and shoot a few rounds just for old times sake....

Hmmm... I don't find mine to be particularly quiet. The 'crack' with hv .22 is the sound barrier being broken when the projectile passes 1126 fps. If the ammo is not rated righer than that, you will notice quieter shooting. In your case, it is possible that the rounds are not hitting rated velocity when they exit the barrel. How's the bore look?

As long as it works as intended, your cooey is fine and dandy. Enjoy.

Yeah, doesnt seem to be anything oubviously wrong... it shoots and cycles, so I will enjoy shooting without the need for earplugs!

I have a very simialr effect from my Lakefield 64b as well as my heavier actioned 10-22, but its fine by me :)

Hmmm, so maybe thats just the norm then...

Well the ammo I was shooting (which is `loud` out of my bolt action) are CCI standard velocity 1070 FPS, CCI mini mag 1260 FPS, and CCI stingers 1640 FPS... I also shoot CCI Blazer bulk, which are rated at 1100 FPS i believe...

I didnt put the stingers through the Cooey, but maybe I should try and see if they will get some sort of reaction....

The bore looks good. And like I said, as far as I know this old gun has a very low round count for its age.
