I have a Cooey model 71 in .243. I've always been told its the same gun a Win model 70 with the exception of the safety. It even says Winchester right on it. I want to get a new laminated stock for it and was wondering if anyone knows if a model 70 stock will fit. I dont know anyone with a model 70 so I cant try it.

Thanks
Tim

I have seen a model 71 action put into a model 70 stock. It took lots of bedding work and some filler in the recoil lug area. The end result was not as nice as you would think but it was a useable rifle.
The action on a Coey 71 is a round action like a Remington with a recoil lug sandwiched between the receiver and the barrel.
If you give it a try let us know how it works out. I have been thinking about doing the same thing to my 71 in 225 win, it has a stock that has been reworked by a self proclaimed artist and is butt ugly. I have done some glass bedding before but as of yet have not had the courage to try the conversion.
Best of luck.

If you are going to restock your rifle Western gun parts here in Edmonton has replacement stocks for the model 71.I replaced mine with one of theirs. It is made of walnut unfinished but inletted.Nice looking stock.

I've got 2 71's both in .225.1 is in original stock and the other is in a model 70 stock. It took a bit to bed it as the lugs in a diff spot and filler was used but it shoots dimes at 100 yds all day.I can ask around for a stock as I know lots of guys that use to work at Winchester.I also have a trigger group set and thinking of making another and just fitting my bolt to it.Like to get something diff than .225 this time.
Hey 257ROBERTS,sounds like you got that from the shop in Bewdely ?.

88 man,
Picked it up from my brother in law about 30 years ago. He worked at Winchester.
Are you ready to sell me one of those 88's in 243 yet.

Sorry to hijack the thread TReX300

Did it long ago. The 70 stock will go on, but you need to remove some wood in the recoil lug slot. The 70's is about 1/8th farther back, as I recall. No big deal if you have a rotary tool. Then you bed normally. Don't forget lots of release agent.
