Hello Gunnutz,

I just got this rifle from my Grandfather and the rifle was his dad's(my Great Grandfather).
I am looking for any info you can provide as the net has little to no info on it.
The only marking I can see are included in the photo.
From what I have read it is a target model made for only a few years around 1940.

is the .22cal, 22lr or something else?

Any information is greatly appreciated.

This model was made with this stock configuration starting in 1939 and ending in 41 or 42. Its pretty much a model 75 with target sights. They weren't labeled for 22 type but neither were the 62 or 82. My interpretation of the "22 CAL" stamping is S/L/LR. I haven't seen many around. That's quite the find!

Could you post a pic of the front sight when you get a chance? I have never seen that on a Cooey. Come to think of it, I don't think I have ever seen a Model 78 in person.

The 78's are a lot less common than the model 75. The early model 78 had a regular stock pretty much like the model 60. They will handle S, L or LR. I believe there were variations as far as front sights but a hooded front target sight was one type. Your gun should have a rear peep sight. I would find one to complete the gun. They come up on ebay once in awhile. In fact, one was just on there.

Just checked a couple of mine and they have the same type of hooded front sight.
