Is the Cooey 78 a common .22 ?

It seems that I can not find a lot of information about it on the net, only infos about the 39,64 and 82. One guy even told me that it might have some collector's value, which I find hard to believe ...

This little 22 is quite a shooter and I would not want to beat it up too much if it should be something "special".

thx

The model 75 and 78 are basically the same gun except the 78 had target sights. The 78 was not made near as long as the 75 so is harder to find. In one reference by John Belton in his book he says the 78 was introduced in 1938 and had been discontinued by 1942. In another reference in the book he says 1950. The 78 was the platform the model 82 was built on. The 82 was the military trainer, not the 78.

Thx for the infos. It looks exactly like the one in the link with the peep sights, maybe in slightly better condition. It is definitely not the smooth bore. Discontinued by 1942 translates into almost 70 years of age. Shooting the way it does it is a keeper :)

exomax: welcome to the "78 club". There are a few of us around here. I got mine from a small town gunsmith back 20 years ago and will never sell it. The 78 came in two stock styles: the one shown in the link with the fat belly as I call it, and with a straight forehand stock. Mine is the straight stock. Mine also came without the peep sight but has a ramp sight. It still shoots straighter than I can.

Thx for all the info. At the end of the day and in summary it seems like a tough, reliable, very accurate, no plastic, lightweight, low cost & BIG FUN .22 and best it is Canadian made.
