Hello,

I have an old Cooey 84 12 gauge that opens when fired.

This is a hand me down from my father and has been sitting around for years. I did give it a good cleaning (will need a few more sessions) but am looking for some feedback on what I can try before taking it to the gunsmith. I remember shooting it as a kid and it didn’t have this problem

In the event I do need a gunsmith is there anyone people could recommend in the GTA?

On a side note does anyone know how to date a Cooey based in SN?

Thanks

I appreciate the info Arlo

I'm going to go with TacOrd, the trip is worth it if the smith is a good guy to deal with.

Thanks

Adam

Probably just needs a shim on the lug where the locking bolt slides into. You could probably even put a dab of JB Weld on the lug that would last for awhile. Cheap and just reapply as needed. If taking to a gunsmith get a quote first.

You can't date a Cooey by the serial number as there are no records. The model 84 came out in 1948. If it is a model 84 that says Cooey/Winchester on the receiver, then it is after 1961.

The spring under the lug is weak. A gunsmith can fix it. Since you do not understand th eproblem be safe and have a smith fix it. This is a common problem even in high end shotguns. Like the MX3 Perazzi. I had the same problem and the fix we easy for a smith.

Many moons ago, (50??) I had an 84 12 ga. that would do that. The last time I fired it, we couldn't find the fired hull. A friend took it and used it for parts.

i have set something up with the gunsmith at TacOrd a month from now :-S, it seems that gunsmiths around the GTA are few and far between and TacOrd seem to have a good rep from what I can see.

I won't be shooting it any time soon.

Thanks for the info/advice

Adam

ok

took it apart, it looks like the hinge pin (???) is bent. Does anyone know where I can get one in Ontario and is it difficult to change? It seems like there is more too it then just sliding it out.

If you are talking the pin that goes right through the receiver where the barrel hinges then I would say it is not a job for you to tackle. I'm not sure how the hinge pin would get bent. They get worn. I would be more inclined to think that, as already suggested by another member, that the spring under the bolt is weak and the bolt is not going firmly into the lug recess that holds the action closed.

I just had exactly the same problem repaired by a gunsmith just last week on my Cooey 12 gauge. Cost me $57 and three months of waiting.

The spring under the lug is weak. A gunsmith can fix it. Since you do not understand th eproblem be safe and have a smith fix it. This is a common problem even in high end shotguns. Like the MX3 Perazzi. I had the same problem and the fix we easy for a smith.

I believe that was the basic problem. The gunsmith said something about adding a small part and tightening the spring. I took the gun out just this weekend and it no longer breaks open when fired. It still won't hit a rabbit though, I'm unsure how to fix that problem.
