I have the opportunity to purchase a Cooey 84 with the 36" barrel and would like some idea of what I should pay for it. It is in poor but shootable condition and the receiver has no Cooey or Winchester stamp on it anywhere (witch I find strange).

I don't intend to re-sell it so I'm not concerned about turning a profit on it. Any suggestions on a fair price?

$75.00-$100.00 for what you describe. Are you sure it's a Cooey?
Anyhow, I sold a very nice one last fall with 36" barrel and the flying goose impressed into the stock for $170.00.
Also, I'm not sure but was the model 84 made in a 36" barrel? Any that I have seen with the 36" barrel have been the Winchester 840 model. I would be looking it over again to make sure it isn't a Stevens or something else. If it is a Cooey/Winchester, it will have that on the side of the receiver unless it has been sanded off or worn off.

Yes definitely the 84 was made in 36 as i have one with matching numbers and have owned several others. It is possible it could be one of cooeys house brands but they generally have some type of identification on the side of the receiver

Not necessarily. I have an 840 with no markings on the receiver except the serial number. I don't know when they stopped marking the receiver but they did. Mine has a serial number in the 950000 + range.

Does the barrel have a 3" chamber? That would indicate that it's likely an 840 and not an 84. It might even be a 37A. What are the markings on the barrel? It could also be a parts gun that has been cobbled together.

I have little to no experience with Cooey's. I only recently picked up a rough beater myself but figured I'd pass on what little info I could offer.

Yes they made the 84 with a 36". There was quite a few of them down this way back in the day. Guys thought they were some kind of special goose gun but only fired 2 3/4"

I was referring to the model 84 which the OP believes he has.
Even if a later model with no markings on the receiver, there should be a stamping on the barrel somewhere. It will say Cooey, Winchester-Cooey or Winchester on it somewhere.

A regular 840 would go for around $100-$150, but apparently the 36 inch models are very sought after and command a much higher price. My son's hunting buddies are paying in the $400 range for them. I sure wouldn't, but...

Ooops, hadn't noticed the "poor but shootable" bit.

A single shot Cooey 12 gauge in "poor" condition is worth whatever you are willing to pay, anything more than $50.00 that seller certainly had a good day!!!

Wow, guess I sure sold mine too cheap. They must have too much money burning a hole in their pockets to pay that kind of money for one.

I'm just going by what my son told me. I know I sure wouldn't pay anywhere near that for a single shot goose gun, but apparently, they swear by them.

Thanks. Lots on my plate and with the daughter in university the last few years I have been trying to stay clear since I spend too much money here :) and have none it seems anymore
Dam I thought it would be easy once we paid the house and cars off. This school stuff is way worse than they ever were :(
