So I have recently acquired a Cooey 840 20g shotgun and Im wondering what the differences are between it and the earlier model 84s.

Visually the hammer looks to be of a different shape, and the finish looks like other Winchesters I have of that era.

Ive handled an 84 quite a bit, and while I dont have one side by side to compare to, the 840 feels significantly heavier then I recall the 84 feeling. The barrel is quite thick, and from the outside almost looks like a 12g. Am I imagining this?

Thanks

I think so.
That is not to say the 840 is not a good shotgun just not as well made. The 84 had steel construction through out.The 840 had plastic and alloy in a lot of its construction.
I have the 84, 840 and 37 in 28ga. Next time I take them out for their storage oiling I will see if I can get some sxs pics
Also have a full set of 84's but only kept 840's in 28ga and maybe a 16ga 840 cannot remember
Cheers

From the sounds of your post I would say you had one of the later Model 840 shotguns that had the heavier forend. The earlier Model 840 shotguns had the lighter forend, like the Model 370.The later Model 840 shotguns had the heavier ones like on the Model 37A.

The thicker barrel is normal.Even the Model 84 shotguns were this way.I expect the same size barrel blank was used for all gauges.

You could be right on the fore end. Im surprised that the change added that much weight to it.
