It is only the guns after Winchester took over that have the checkering. Previous to that, it was the Cooey model 84 and they had no checkering. The 84 in 28 gauge is even harder to find and will bring more money. Has the stock been revarnished on the gun shown? It doesn't match the condition of the barrel from the pic. If original stock finish, the right person will probably pay $200.00 for it.

It appears to have a varnished look.

thank guys for info guys as for stock I am not sure bought it like this 15 years ago. and whats the chekering you guys are talking about?

The checkering on the pistol grip of the stock and on the forearm. The model 84 had no checkering.

If it's been revarnished the value is usually decreased a little. However, it all depends on how badly someone wants a 28 gauge. I have an 840 in 28 gauge and 3 of the model 84's in 28 gauge. Someone is always asking me to sell one so you never know.

No, I wasn't clear in my first post. What I meant was there was no checkering on the shotguns before Winchester took over. However, the 840 could be had in different variants. Some had checkering, some did not. Some had a plain forearm, some had the finger channel. However, the model 84 only came as a plain stock.

ok. that's clearer.....thought i had a one off for a minute there.lol

Some of the early Model 840 shotguns had walnut stocks. They used the stocks left over for the Model 84.Those I have seen were checkered. After this walnut was used up ,birch checkered wood was used.Later when the Winchester Model 37A was introduced and the Winchester Model 370 was discontinued .The wood on the Model 840 was still birch unlike the wood used on the Model 37A,but was un checkered and had the fuller forend of the Model 37A.

The Winchester/Cooey Model 840,Winchester 370 and Winchester Model 37A were made in the Ontario ,Canada plant and used the same action. The differences were in wood, finish and changes made to make the shotgun cheaper to produce, such as plastic and white metal parts instead of steel. For awhile after taking over the Ontario Cooey plant Winchester Made the Model 84 just the same way Cooey did.The only difference was the Cooey shotguns were marked Made by Cooey and the Winchester/Cooey made Model 84 shotguns were marked ,made by Winchester/Western.The Winchester/Cooey Model 84 was dropped when the Winchester/CooeyModel 840 was introduced.

I bought one a couple years back and paid $140....looks to be in about the same condition.
Unfortunately, one can't always find guns at what someone else paid for them. Sometimes a certain gun is only worth what is being asked, sometimes a person is in a hurry to sell and sometimes the seller doesn't do his/her homework before selling .
