Looks like I'm going to be doing the conversion to a Cooey carcano(6.5x54MS to 7.62x39) by using a lee enfield barrel.its a natural conversion as 7.62x39 cycles perfectly in the carcano's standard en block clips and you don't need to change/modify the bolt face or ejector. Also you don't need to have a chamber reamer, all you have to do is take a certain amount of the treaded shanks off and rethread for the action as the neck and body are the same as the 303 British.

Also I'm going to drill and tap it for a scope mount. Anybody have a recomendation for a solid mount preferably weaver railed or with built in 1" rings

This is going to be my spare time project so it will take awhile but I will do a step by step for others as there's not much for instructions out there so I'm going to try as best as I can to explain my R&D problems for others wanting to do it

I have a reamer, so have never done the conversion using an unaltered .303 chamber. I have used .303 barrels, leaving the original chamber short, and then reaming for final headspace.
Without a reamer, some really careful measurement and machining would be necessary. Might be an idea to use a Savage style locking collar to allow tuning of headspace.
You need to access the top of the action to load, so either an offset sidemount or foreward scout scope would be necessary.

Because of the way the bolt handle is attached to the bolt, any scope base almost has to be a side, or partially side mounted one. I have often toyed with the idea of cutting off the bolt handle but leaving enough sticking out to still provide a "safety lug." Then, welding a new bolt handle on the end of the bolt, making the appropriate modifications. SMELLIE and I have discussed this several times,. but be never seemed to find enough time to do one -- other projects were more of a priority. A one piece custom rail could be made, with a clearance slot for the cut off portion of the bolt handle. It might also need a bit of a filler block in the front of the magazine too.

I'm going to go with an offset side mount but easyer said then done to find one, this is going to be an accuracy build to so I want to see how much accuracy I can squeeze out of this rig(cast bullets will be used)

Williams Gunsight makes (made?) a sidemount base which could be used with either overbore or sidemount rings.
Perhaps the rings that Weaver makes for '94 Winchesters could be used with a sidemount base for round receivers.

This. /\

I used the same setup on the Cooey Carcano I scoped. It wasn't too awkward to shoot and I could consistently get groups under 1.5" with it.

I'm not a fan of scout scope mounts so I'll stick with the Winchester 94 scope mount Idea. The gun has just showed up and has really nice rifling so I think I'm going to buy one in much worse condition to butcher.if anyone has a beater one cheap pm me
