Sometimes when you shoot it, you can feel a slight little wind blowing back at your face from the breach. Clearly it is gas escaping the chamber and somehow making it's way back face-wards. How dangerous is it? And could it be fixed? If it's not safe and nonfixable, I'll part the gun away.

Pffft!

Examine the empty brass carefully. Are there any ruptures in the rim or at the firing pin strike? A piece of brass in the eye would not be a good thing nor would powder remnants. I would have it repaired or retired if it were mine.

I had this happen once with a .22 Cooey but it was beyond dirty. It was a wonder the bolt would close! I just thought it was the residue powder around the bolt being igniated or something.

Could that be possible? I still use that gun and it never happened again although I clean it now.

On my Dad's old single shot, the extractor rubbing on the extractor cutout wore through into the chamber. Every so often, it would rupture through the cutout and blow gas and powder everywhere.

Then again, was your ammo Remington? Remington rimfire ammo is crap, cases split all the time.

The brass has never been ruptured or split; it is clean and there's no buildup of crud. Unfortunately, now that you mention it, it was Remington ammo. Case closed.

I have recently had this happen in a Lakefield as well. When I pulled the bolt out, the bore looked like it was partly plugged. Seems to be mostly smoke as I could blow it out. I cleaned it good, and am waiting to see if it repeats. I had fired many thousands out of this gun, the only thing that changed was I had a little water problem in my basement, drove the humidity up for several days, and the bulk pack federal 22's now look like they have the initial stages of corrosion, kind of a white coating. I'm hoping either the cleaning or changing ammo will solve the problem.

I've never had trouble with Remington Ammo, but reading all the threds I'm beginning to think it's just a matter of time. Think I'll stick mostly to federal.
