Cooey model 39

My first rifle. Dad bought it for me at Christmas when I was 14. I'm guessing Xmas of 1963. $11.99 brand new at local hardware store in Listowel. No sales taxes in 64. Shot a lot of muskrats and racoon with it. Fur prices were decent at that time. Life was simple (and good) for a teenage boy growing up on a farm in the 60's. Very accurate , simple, well made rifle. Most farmers had a Cooey 22 and single shot shotgun. Pretty standard farm tools in SW Ont at that time.

I have three Cooeys a model 75 single shot s/l [first gun] a model 64 semiauto 22lr a model 84 12 gauge . Had to rebuild the stock of 64 and am in process of sprucing up 84 and splicing stock. I wouldn't accept less than $250 as all are antique collectors items.

Cooey model 39's started.. about 1939 .. and ran right to the end in 1979. So there's quite a range of variations and styles. Everybody either had one, or knew a buddy , dad, granddad or mom, or grandma, who had one. And Cooey's are suddenly getting more popular and desirable. Not unusual to see them going $100-150 , but if you think you can still buy one for $11.99, you need to find a guy that thinks selling one for $11.99 is still normal ;) . Better yet, start asking dad, mom, grandpa or grandma if they have one and get one for free!

I bought a model 39 for $25, and a model 600 for $50 about 8 years ago - the 600 has scratches in the stock finish, with fairly light bluing wear, the 39 has minimal bluing, surface rust and a "refinished" stock - looks like it was stained and nothing else. Deals like that are few and far between though.

We need try and be realistic when giving values. Not all guns of a given brand are collector items, especially once it's been messed with. No Cooey is an antique, old, and maybe a few are rare, but they are not antique. All the guns you list are quite common Cooeys. A nice original model 75, untouched, is about a $130.00 gun unless maybe NIB., Most are lower. The 64 semi-auto is typically a $140.00 gun, give or take on condition. The model 84 is $125.00-$150.00 give or take. If a gun is NIB, then it will bring more. Once messed with or repaired it will bring less. I have a model 39 and a couple of 64's, along with a few other model Cooeys NIB. Maybe I'd get $250.00 for the 39 and 64 because they are NIB. Otherwise, no way. Now if you are talking sentimental value, that's different.

Well known Bancroft auction house sells older Cooey's on a regular basis. 39 and 75's in very good condition usually around a 100 bucks. 84 shotguns in 12 gauge about the same. 20's and 410's $125 or more. Local's like them for grouse hunting. Don't see many 16's or 28's for sale. Above prices do not include tax or 10 per cent buyer's premium- 15 if bought on line.
