I bought it used at an auction and it won't load the first round. It ends up sticking up vertically in front of the bolt face. The number of rounds I load doesn't seem to make a difference. The first one or two rounds do this, the rest slide up under the extractor with no problem. I've often wondered if the mag spring is to strong.
It belonged to an old gaffer who passed away. I've owned it for 30+ years. I'm going to refinish it and give it to my son..so I want to get it functioning right.
Any idea's.

It is typical of that rifle.......... it may be easier to get used to it than it is for you to fix it.

Try finding a gunsmith experienced with this rifle and be prepared to replace the extractors a few times trying to make it work properly.

thanks guntech. I sort of have gotten use to it..but my son is only 10 and I didn't want him to get discouraged because the rifle doesn't work properly.
I guess the only solution is to buy him a new one!:D
And I can tell my wife some guy on the interweb told me to! lol

Mine has never done this. Make sure that you clean the extractors well and try again.

One of the ones I have ( I have 2) has hard to feed to start.

The round is fed into the extractors (control feed??) So if its to tight or dirty it could cause this.

Well I just did some experimenting. If I loaded 1 round in the rifle it fed perfectly. If I loaded 2 rounds, it fed perfectly most of the time. If I put 10 in..the first one would either end up vertical or jump out of the chamber all together.

It sounds like with the increased pressure of the compressed spring, the round is missing the extractors....... it might need a bit of tightening up or the follower may need tweaking... it is all try and test until it works....

Dennis..can you define tweaking and tightening? Maybe Dosing will become usefull after all!

tweak - bend or adjust in the correct direction

tightening - making the extractors tighter on the rim of the cartridge
