camster is right about the clean part. But running it dry was the only way for ol' timers because the new synthetic lubes we have today didn't exist. Something like BreakFree CLP is amazing. For a test, don't even clean it - just spray some into the action and go shoot for a while. THEN clean it. You'll be amazed.
