Here's an update to the barrel notch........don't do it.
I took this Cooey out today among a few other new to me shooters and tried out the
barrel notch change.
It worked good with old ammo, but when I tried CCI Blazers, I got a pop out the bottom.
Couple more went through and got another pop.
Here's what happened.

The second pop indeed made me look for the other one in the snow.
Not a suggested modification................:HR:

A fellow gummutter's sent me a few parts guns and I think he erred..........
So this tired gal was missing the detach mag and I soon came to know that the
rectangular plastic ones were no longer made, found or in existence.
A kit was available and I felt the shock point of it. Sometimes something isn't worth
the kerch$ng to bring it up to shooting iron qualifications.
I went to visit a local fellow and rooted through his parts bin.
I purchased at a reasonable cost the parts needed to get this gal up and running.
I had a beat up old mag already.
And the plastic trigger guard was cracked. Here's a few photos, well a bunch.........

The old mag clip and bracket need to come off and a newer style mag well is needed. The two old screws should work for
this update. The bottom plate can be filed, but the kitty I snooped in had one.

Here is the replacement mag well and my spare mag.

This is it installed on the receiver.

The original barrel retainer or U-bracket needs to be clipped on the mag well side. Here's a photo of it and the yellow
marked area needs to be removed.

Here it is all together, but it didn't cycle worth chit and it wouldn't eject either.

So I took it all apart and found this.......boogered extractor.

So if your mag looks beat up, best to change it.

Then I took at look at the gal and figured all that banging and bashing and grinding and cuss'in, well I gave her a body rub.

LOOPY you did a BANG UP Job on that Cooey....Can I buy it back for same Price?. Thanks for Savin one that woulda went in the parts bin

I got this one from Del Selin. My buddy went there on a mission and he told me Del took it off a bolt he had in his bin.
Thanks Del, by the way.
Not sure if he has any more or not.

I just received both the wire ejector and a stamped ejector brand new from Western gun parts delivered to Ontario for 56.95 .I ordered both because my cooey 64 winchester western that I bought used had a broken stamped ejector in it that was actually home made.( I think I broke it when I took apart to clean)but it worked well up to that point.when I went to order it was told this model is supposed to have the spring style ejector so I ordered both 19.95 for stamped style 14.95 for spring style . shipping was 15.50 for either 1 or 2 pieces anyway so if the spring worked I could use the new stamped one in my Lakefield 64b or keep it for a spare since that rifle works fine with the stamped one in it.the rifles seem to be the same other than the Lakefield has a steel trigger guard and steel magazine with different barrel u-bolt.to make a long story even longer the I installed the spring in the cooey and fired 30 rounds with no problems but like I said I had good shell ejection before even with the fairly crude home crafted stamped style that I bought it with.My question is does it really matter what style you install in a 64 or 64b both have a small vertical slot with a small hole in middle on the barrel and both seem to enter the pin fine?l

Welcome aboard!

The channel cut in the barrel is not the same, nor the drilled hole at the end that retains it.

My original 64 (I've owned quite a few of these) wire ejector was broken. I could have spent 12 bucks, and 2 weeks getting a replacement, or use one of the flat plate style NOW(then). I opted for the immediate. Had to drill a hole to retain the flat style, and open up the channel.

I haven't tried a wire-style in a barrel designed for flat-style, but am sure it would be too floppy to work.

Maybe that's what the previous owner did with the channel as to why it looks the same as my 64b. The spring was a little sloppy in the barrel but when I assembled it and the forend of the spring slid into the bolt there was no play and it seems to work fine.Do you think I should put the flat ejector in it since it's probably been modified for that or leave it?Do you think it could cause wear in the bolt if its doing all the work keeping the spring in place? Thanks.
