I was given an old Model 64. The magazine, which I think is the original, is cracked down the side. I’m reading that a Savage Model 64 will work. Can anyone confirm or suggest alternatives? Any modifications needed?

Thanks,
Dave

Two different versions, with two different magazines.
64a has a plastic mag. The b version uses metal mags and should be interchangeable with the savage 64s.

Is the magazine with it a plastic one or metal one?
New metal magazines interchange with old metal magazines, old plastic magazine rifles will need some additional parts to use newer metal magazines.

New metal keyhole mags work in cooey 64b rifles. The old metal mags may or maynot work in new savage 64 rifles. My 3 new 64s wont run with 6 different old mags

Thanks for the help guys.
So it's labeled as a "Cooey Model 64", no A or B, and it's a plastic mag. So would I assume it's an A?

Yea, the new savage magazines will work by swapping some new savage 64 parts onto the old rifle.
Western Gun Parts apparently offers it as a kit, sometimes people on the EE will offer their own kits, or you could buy the parts needed directly from savage.
Kind in mind, some fitting will be required. At least in my experience.

I have the same riffle with a couple plastic mags. I will be ordering the conversion kit from Western Gun Parts (Edmonton Alberta) so I can use the metal Savage mags.

Here are the vids someone doing the conversion:

If you convert to the b styles magazines, which I would because the magazines are readily available, pick up a few spare mags. The feed lips get worn down fairly quickly.

I have the 'new' model 64, and have had the wear issues with 3 mags. I complained to Savage and they sent me 3 NEW replacements. Before that, I had 'fiddled' with the old mage (which I now have working) and have a post to deal with my mods to the mags. This will help you when they wear down - they are made of pot metal and the cartridge rims 'shave' the feed lips.

The 64 is a really accurate gun that I wish had better mags !

ALSO - I found a magazine pouch for all 6 mags for only $10 on amazon.ca - https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B06XKDVPVD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - The mage fit perfectly! If you find other things to order you can get free shipping! I found a cheek riser for $20 for my SKS and a bipod for my 223 for $29 -you gotta love e-shopping:dancingbanana:
