Just picked up a Cooey model 71 carbine in very decent condition. The caliber was .270 which I have never seen before. I`d seen lots of .308 and .243 carbines in the past. Does anyone have any experience with these rifles... I know some parts are not interchangable with the post `64 model 70 Winchesters. Thanks.

Cooey made the 71 in 30-06 and 270. No reason there wouldn't be a "carbine" version. I have a 270 Win Cooey 71 with a mannlicher stock, obviously not a factory option.

I own one in 270 cal. A very accurrate rifle. Mine liked 150 or 160 grain bullets. That is because it is long throated.

My first rifle was a Cooey 71 in .270. Still remember its serial...4471. Really liked 130 grain Hornady 130 SP. I would like to buy it back one day.

I have one that's not so much a factory rifle anymore; slimmed barrel, and custom wood.
The action is really quite different than the Winchester model 70. It's a round reciever, with a recoil lug held captive like the Remington 700, the reciever itself seems to be shorter, and the trigger is different, with a sliding thumb safety. The only thing that it seems to share with the Winchester model 70 is the bolt release.
I don't think any of this is a bad thing though. The triggers are adjustable, and mine is down to a petite 3lbs with no creep, and the light action allows for an overall very light rifle. Mine is only 7lbs with scope.
It also shoots quite well. I got mine as a family earloom from my uncle (paid him some money so tha I didn't feel bad for taking it), and I only wanted it because it was the first rifle that I ever remember anyone carrying. I was told by both my dad, and my uncle that it never shot all that well, and with my uncles loads it didn't. The first load that I happened to throw together started punching out 1.25" groups with the 3X scope that it had on it.
I went from admiring that rifle to loving it.
Mike
