Just bought a model 84 single cooey shotgun and the forestock is a little loose.
Moves very slightly when tapped with finger.
Took it off and unscrewed the spring assembly and there is a "wire spring" underneath the assembly.
Do you tighten up this wire spring, or should I leave everything alone and take it to a gunsmith?
Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks.:)

The fore stock on a COOEY SINGLE SHOT SHOTGUN is held on by spring tension only. If you have to pull quite hard on it to remove it , thats the way it is supposed to be. When the gun is closed and locked the forestock does nothing , the gun can be fired safely without a fore stock. But when you open it the fore stock has a part that limits the folding of the barrel, which without the fore stock the barrel can easily come off. If when you shoot it the forestock starts to come off or comes off in your hand because it is so loose then it needs to be repaired or replaced. There are also 2 different types one with a coil spring and an older one with a blade or flat spring ,they don't interchange easily.

For the price, buy a new fore stock or at least the metal spring assembly and do it yourself. It would cost more if you got to a smith.

It is hard to tell you to replace anything when we can't see or touch the firearm. Yours may be just the way it is supposed to be or it may need replacing. Ask someone who has experiance with a COOEY and if they also think it needs to be replaced , replace it yourself , it is only 2 wood screws. If there is a gunsmith in your area see if they have one you can buy. Ask here for other places that may have the part and what it's catalog name is, so you are asking for the right thing. If it doesn't seem too loose take it to the range and shoot it.

Take it to the Kamloops Gun Show, March 25, 26th. I will be at table A35 and could help you. Probably will have the parts you need, if you do need parts.
