Cooey model 840......OK for Steel ????

Unlikely. I believe they stopped manufacturing them before steel shot came in. If you have it opened up to a loose Modified or a snug Imp Cyl, you should be fine and have a much more useable pattern. OR you can only use smaller shot, nothing bigger than #2. BUT, aren't the chokes on these guns established by swaging the muzzle? Also note that a short forcing cone right off the chamber is also not good with steel shot. It can be lengthened easily by a gunsmith as well. But again, we're talking about a single shot Cooey.

I would not touch this gun with steel. Save some more money (and you do not have to have much) and get something newer that will be "happy" with steel blasting down the tube :)

Certainly possible with large steel shot in a Cooey with a swaged full choke. Get it opened up to improved cylinder and you'll be fine, get the forcing cone lengthened while you are at it. No need to buy a new gun, Cooeys are good sturdy guns.

X2....had it done myself several years ago. Worked perfect..with that said...the shotgun was in very good condition..perfect bore, strong, tight action...etc...Never had a problem with mine..

My concern with the cooey is if they have been proof tested ( not the proof steel material some are stamped with) to adhere to SAMMI standards and factors of safety. Myself I will not fire steel shot out of any old gun that has not been but to each their own.
I will have to look at an old cooey to see if they are but I would be suprised if they were done in canada. That way you know they are fine with altered chokes to accept the pressures of today's steel shotshells unless you put some Aussy shells in them which run about 6000 psi higher but who has those in canada.
Also have to remember today's steel shot is a lot harder than the old barrels so over time it will damage it if that is a concern. Also the 840 came out in 1968 with plastic and alloy parts and is not as strong of a gun as the original model 84 made from 48-67.

If you sell the Cooey and add the $$$ you'd spend to have the choke opened up plus the forcing cone lengthened you can buy a used "modern" gun and not have to worry about what loads you run down the tube. Just a thought!

There ya go!! Probably the best option in the long run unless you find someone to do it for cheap. Like sawing the barrel off.
