I need to know the length overall of the firing pin on a Cooey model 840 20gauge shotgun.

The gun often misfires. The round is dimpled but does not fire. I suspect that someone has installed the wrong pin. The spring is okay.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Open the Cooey. Holding the trigger back and push the hammer forward until the pin protudes to it's max. Inspect the pin for wear or missing material. There is a screw at the side of the receiver that will allow you to remove the pin. Check and clean any debris. (alot of these old guns are very dirty) I suspect you may have a weak hammer spring rather than a short firing pin. Pull the stock and clean and lube the spring. I would take the gun down (with stock off) and hose the action out with degreaser or Rem cleaner or G96 etc. It is often amazing what will come out and how it will improve performance. I beleive all Cooey firing pins were the same as all shotshells use 209 primers.

Madtrapper's suggestions are the first and easiest thing to try. If the problem persists, I suggest replacing the hammer spring plunger. If the gun has been shot a lot, it is likely the plunger is worn out.
