Beeen itching to get a Cooey for quite a while, come across 84 and 840, a question for you experts, Do they have any major difference of quality and performance wise?

Thanks

Trigun

it was renamed the 840 in ~1965, so the model 84 is at least an early 60's model.

few gun manufacturers have actually UPPED their quality over the years, so if their conditions are roughly the same id go for the older one :)

Winchester bought out Cooey in 1961.For a time they kept the Model 84 as it was except for the Winchester Western markings instead of H W Cooey. About 1968 the Model 84 was changed and called the Model 840.The action was the same but some plastic parts and poorer wood were used on the 840.Winchester did to the Cooey line in 1968 the same as they had done to the main Winchester line in 1964.Droped the quality.

I have a 28 gauge Winchester Cooey Model 84 and a 28 gauge Winchester Cooey Model 840.The Model 84 is the better built shotgun.

On January 2, 1967 the Cooey Model 840 Single Shot Shotgun was listed in the Winchester-Cooey catalogue on page 18 for $36 for the 36" 12 gauge and $32.95 for the other gauges and lengths. It was the 840 from 1967 to 1979.

I'm not sure what plastic parts above is referring to other than the butt plate, but the only real differnece between the two, 84 and 84, is that the 840 has a set screw, through the reciever to hold the firing in place.A model 84 , broken down ,with hammer drawn back ,when shaken hard enough, the firing pin will fall out.I replaced a few firing pins on 84's, where all of a sudden there was just no pin.

The fore end spacer is plastic on the 840.The 84 has a nice semi case coloured reciver while the 840 reciver appears to be Japaned black. From looking at mine I would say that the trigger guard appears to be made of a different type of metal.

Model 84 is the best by far. And they are alot lighter. Steel hinge plates are at western gun parts for about $12-$18, (i think). You can carry that 84 all day, its made to hunt with!
