I have a model 39, Marked Cooey Winchester. It does not have a serial number. Question is, did cooey start using serial numbers before they were bought by Winchester or was there a transition period from Cooey to winchester? I was thinking that Winchester took over the same year that they started using serial numbers. Beautiful little gun with a figured wood stock.

Cooey did not use serial numbers on their rifles except for some that were exported to Austrailia. Cooey did put serial numbers on the shotguns. Winchester took over Cooey in 1961. Even then, I don't believe they put serial numbers on until 1968. So your Winchester/Cooey marked gun will be from betwen 1961 and 1967. The model 750 replaced the model 39 in 1967. I don't know if the two overlapped for awhile.

ya, for some reason i always thought that it was WHEN Winchester took them over they had to start using numbers, but like you i have a model 60 and 39 that says 'Winchester Arms' on it but yet has no number.
