I imagine ther are those of us who have had the not so great priveledge of cleaning up a house after a loved one passes on. Not on the top of my lists for fun things to do.
My Grandparents house seems packed with trinkets and goodies that get me squeeling with glee. This weekend we were trying to get the house ready for some renters who will be moving in soon. Trouble is they came from the era where you tossed nothing out. Every scrap of paper, cloth, note, etc is there in a hodge podge of boxes.
Upside is when you do enough looking, you will find some cool stuff. Here is a couple things I found yesterday and this afternoon:
- A Marble's catolog, dating 1924 in really good shape, barely any wear at all.
It has a nice display of their knives, reciever and tang sights. Just a neat little conversation piece for display.
-From 1932, a Western Cartridge company pamphlet written by Col. Townsend Whelen!
It is called American Big Game Shooting. This 5x7" booklet goes over the 6.5 Mannlicher, 30 Springfield, 30-40 Krag, 250 Savage 7mm Mauser, 375H&H, 35 Winchester, 405 Winchester and what game each cartridge suits. It also has some of his pictures from escapades taken and funny captions like:
And here is the Caribou, the 180gr bullet litterally threw him sideways 2 yards and planted him into this mossy rock.
He also planted a Ram the ahd 16 3/4" bases
eek: ) and was over 13 years old.
It looks to me like he is packing a Model 54 Winchester rifle. They don't mention which caliber he was using that I have found yet.
- My Unlce Leif's 1937 Alberta Hunting licence was stashed in one of the several trappers books I found too. Giving him permission to shoot any big game that year including Black bear. It has a legal land descrition map withit too, with certain areas marked like that was the only areas he could hunt.
-Classic calendars from 1945, 1966 and 1974 with the good old hunting scenes, all three are in great shape.
-Old hunting mags, one in particular from 1951. A quick flip through has Jack O'Connor discussing how good is the 30-06, really. He must be the one that started it all.
Some of the mags even have ads for German Lugers for sale, for 10 bucks! How can you go wrong?
There is a bunch of other stuff too, but I have been told my internet rations have been used up for the day.
A pretty good cache so far and I've hardly put a dent it the storage rooms yet..
Anyone else out there find any neat trinkets to remember their past friends and family by?
Noel
