Coonan vs Desert Eagle 357.

DE for cool look. That is what you are looking for.
For shooting get a wheel in 357, better yet 44, NVM go 50.

Well, I've never owned the coonan, but I was pretty close to going for it a few times.

Owned two DE's in 44 and 50. They are a neat piece of engineering and a huge head turner. Plenty accurate if you do your part, but god, the ergonomics are by far the worst of any pistol I have ever used. Holding a length of 2x4 and having a guy sledgehammer on the top end of it gives a fairly similar feeling to what the DE is like to shoot. Not overly pleasant or comfortable, and your fingers need to be about 40% longer to reach the controls without having to move your hands around the gun. The best part about the Desert Eagle is that everyone knows what it is, and everyone wants to see it and shoot it. In my opinion it is the kind of gun that is fun to shoot, but loses its novelty fast to own. I wouldn't buy another because it has lost its novelty to me.

Just my .02.

Well..I've got a gold plated Deagle in .357. I can tell you it didn't satisfy, because now not only do I want a Coonan, but the additional barrels and bolt for the Deagle to run .44 and .50 ...

If you've got the cash for a Deagle, you'll probably have the cash for the Coonan as well before long, so pick whatever you like the idea of more now.

If I had to pick (gun to my head...) I'd go for the Deagle. A) like most people have said.."it's a Deagle" & B) you have the option to (relatively) inexpensively upgrade to 2 higher calibers.

Happy blasting my friend!

If you're looking for recoil, the DE in 357 isn't your gun, they're fantastic, but shoot very softly. I made the mistake, at a distributor shoot, of starting with a 50 and working down through 44 and 41 before finishing with 357 - the 357 felt like a very loud, very destructive 22. I've never shot a Coonan, but I handled one of the first generation ones and it was way too long front to back on the grip to be comfortable.

If you are looking to impress other people, get the DE. However if you are looking to impress yourself, the Coonan is the winner. Having owned both over the years I only regret selling the Coonan(original from 90's). Waved a hasty goodbye to the DE. Tired of problem solving and part replacement, BUT apparently the newer ones perform much better. Full house loads only, no lead, poor ergonomics, but everybody who saw it was envious. I am convinced that if it wasnt for Arnold, the DE would be one of those 'what ever happened to..' guns

I love both and I own both.

Coonan in .357
DE .44

Coonan is awesome and the DE also.

Its ok if you want a DE but i wouldnt recommand 357... At least 44

Sometime i call my coonan the "mini DE" its definitely a good 1911 with super smooth light trigger, reliable very accurate gun.

And my DE 44 works very well with good AMMO... shot about 500. Had about 10 jams..

Both are good but DE is now super expensive... 3k too much.

Try buying from IRUNGUNS they got good prices for DE.

EDIT : Wanstalls has a Coonan for 2000$

I would go with the desert eagle in 357mag just for the fact that with a barrel, bolt and mag swap you can shoot 44mag. Than with a barrel and mag swap you can shoot 50ae, 44mag and 50ae use the same bolt.

Thanks for the opinions. Going with the coonan. Not willing to go over $3k for a hand gun (yet).

I remember the good old days when I wouldnt go over $1k.
