Hi all,
Thanks for reading this. I finally got my new Cooper Montana Varminter, in 19-.223 Calhoon. (SWEET)
Shoots very well, but I am having a couple of issues with the extractor.
When I first shot the gun, the extractor broke off, and I was down:bangHead: for a while. Rob, at Cooper sent me 2 new extractors, and Mick has installed one with no problems. I have corrected the issue of case forming, which I feel contributed to the failure, I am using new Winchester brass, however, out of 30 or so, 3 or 4 will not extract.
The bolt closed with pressure, not sure how to describe the effort, just to say "firm'?.
Any ideas?
The possibliity of returning the gun to the factory is all but impossible.
Any help would sure be appreciated.
Take care, Gunmedic.

Cooper Extractors

Boomer,
Thanks for the reply, I have checked all specs, and as far as i can tell they are within range. I had the firing pin out of the bolt, and the new cartridges close with resistance, which I understand ensures good headspace.
I was wondering if I should try Remington brass, maybe the cartridge is a little larger in gripping area than Winchester???
Take care, gunmedic.

I dunno, but I have a rem 700 in 17 rem that occasionally does the same thing. I was thinking of having a sako-style extractor fitted

I think the heavier Remington brass might exacerbate your problem. How far off the lands are you seating your bullet? If the bullet is pushed into the lands this would also produce resistance to closing the bolt. I assume you have trimmed to the proper length.

If all measurements, including the depth of your shell holder, are in spec, what load are you using?

Boomer,
I have checked the seating depth, and cannot find any sign that I am touching the lands. I am somewhat under the acceptable max length of the case. The load is 28.0 of BLC-2, ( with CCI benchrest primers)which is .5 gr under the recommended charge.
Going to the range this am, will post results.
Thanks, again, Gunmedic.

Cooper Extractors

Hi Boomer,
I took the load data from Calhoons information published on his website.
I eased up a bit on the 28.5, to 27.0 of BLC-2.
Since yesterday, many things have risen. I spent 2 hours at Micks' place on Wed,(Many thanks, Mick) and he has finally got it figured out.
My Cooper is a .19-.223 cal rifle, not a .19-.223 Calhoon as I thought.
His Calhoon setup is proprietary, so it cannot be duplicated commercially.
This accounts for the different shoulder angle, and different length of the cartridge.
I have contacted Dave Kiff at Pacific Tool and Die, and have made great headway with information and help from him, and his staff.
I have also contacted Lonnie at Hornady Mfg. and will be having a set of .19-.223 cal dies made up in accordance with a schematic drawing of my chamber from Cooper Rifles that Joe has faxed to Lonnie. (Sounds like a soap opera ehh??)
Anyways, all I have to do is send Hornady 3 fired empty brass, and the dies will be shipped to me after manufacture.
The gun is down for a few weeks, but no problem with that, when I get this done it will be clear sailing.
I appreciate the help from CGNr'S in this.
I will post when the gun is up and shooting.
Many thanks Gunmedic.
