I am frustrated... again.

I called the city to inquire about the local bi-laws where I am staying just outside Montreal. I was transferred to the police and asked if I could legally shoot my bb gun in the back yard. The cop told me to sell my bb gun and buy a video game instead because it was illegal for me to use it here.

I really like guns and I really like shooting. I have a club where I can shoot my guns, but geese, I would like to be able to plink cans in the back yard on a nice day.

I think you should get a more informed opinion.

ie-somethiing like local by-laws, not just some phone jockey.

I thought this was my property?

Many (most?) municipalities have by-laws regarding air-guns & bows.

You can probably get a "discharge permit" (that's what they call it here).

A friend was practicing with his bow in the back yard and got to talk to a "small" officer pointing a "big" ar-15 at him...

Whoever you spoke to sounds like a smarta**. As stated, check your bi-laws...AND use common sense. In some areas it might BE legal, but not safe...depending on what's beyond your backyard.

Don't call, just read the bylaws

:agree: If you call you're likley going to be subjected to that person's opinion, rather than the actual law.

On another note, anytime someone brings up the "don't shoot a gun/airgun just play a video game instead" BS. I tell them to "go buy a fleshlight" They get the point, its not the same thing.

Its super effective :D

I'm routinely surprised by some of the differences between us and the Brits. If I understand the British rules correctly, you're allowed to shoot an airgun on your property everywhere, but you have a legal obligation to ensure that no pellet leaves your property. Sounds very reasonable to me...

Read the bylaws, more than likely it isn't permitted, it's a pretty standard thing. Then do like Bowie said and make a range in your basement. Even if it isn't against the bylaws you probably run a good chance at having the police visit you if you're seen outside with a "gun".

If you're still bored you can sing the national anthem but mumble the "true north strong and free" part.

The video games sounds pretty good to me right now actually.

Did you ask for his badge number and request that statement in writing?Perhaps this was only part of the hype for the release of the Call of Duty game?

BB guns are very inaccurate and not very powerful using a round steel ball in a smooth tube. They are not considered firearms under federal law but your local municipal law may affect your use.

You can shoot inside at small targets using a thick blanket as a hanging backstop.
