since im off with a broken leg i have nothing but time on my hands, so i decided to laser bore sight my new .22 to my red dot, and while i was in there i decided to see how some of my other rifles were doing. my sks was out to lunch but lets be honest, its an sks and shoots 5 inch groups at 100 so how the hell do you zero that scope in, lol. pull out the r700 to see how my windage is, and it was spot on, except when the light hit the barrel i noticed what looked like rust in it. i put my bore light in and it looks shiney and silver and clean, but when i look down the barrel i see a rusty color. i ran my bore brush and cleaner through it several times and some patches but its still there. im guessing this is copper fouling?

yup, it can be stubbourn stuff as I have recently found out. Some more experienced guys told me to get some janitorial strenght ammonia and a good brush (I use nylon brushes) and soak it with some patches of the ammonia, let it soak for a few minutes then scrub with the brush and it should come out. Make sure you dry all the ammonia up with a couple dry patches then follow up with your usual gun oil (I use butches).

good to know, thanks, ill have to get some nylon brushes, id imagine the copper brushes wouldnt last long during this process. lol. ive been using the clp but its garbage, im gonna go back to hoppes i think, the only down side is it stinks up the house and my wife isnt crazy about the smell.

I use a product that some of the sniper forces use called "Copper Gone" . The only place I know that sells it is Hantiuks in Nova Scotia 902-883-8890, Love it but its does smell nasty ! LOL

haha i think it smells great, its like wd40 for guns. she may be crazy but she makes lots of money and cooks and cleans and does other things that may result in a verbal warning form a moderator so i cant mention them, lol.

ill look for the stuff you guys mentioned next time i visit a gun shop. and if not then ill try ammonia, but id like to avoid breathing in that stuff if possible.

I find copper fouling more problematic then lead fouling, I'm not talking about LEADING just clean up after shooting cast boolits.

That is the latest comparison I have seen which I would lend any credence to.

what kind of issues would i run into with heavy copper fouling? that looks like a good read, ill have to check it out tomorrow when i have a little more time.

gotta bring this back and save from making a new thread. what kind of issues will copper fouling create with the gun? id imagine accuracy would be affected by it with all the copper stuck in the grooves, probably more so at longer distances right?

just doing some google reading, im guessing in the 400 or so rounds ive put through this gun without ever using a copper cleaner would cause a pretty good build up on it. hell i cant wait to get this thing clean, i have days where i can hit sub moa at 100 and 200y, wonder if im better than i thought, lol, curious if this would also cause the bullets to hit off center at further distances like they have been

its funny ive been told to use ammonia to clean out the old bore of my enfield that i just cant get clean, is there anything this stuff cant clean? lol. i just need to find some nylon brushes locally.
