Hi Team:

I have some metal parts I'm going to be refinishing, and I will be stripping off the blueing and some surface rust in hydrochloric (muriatic) acid. Anyone know the recommended concentration? I'll be starting from the standard concentration you buy at Canadian Tire. I know to add the acid to the water, not the other way around.

Thanks for your comments. :)

I like stuff like this

I like to use a de-bluing rust remover. There are other versions of the stuff and it can be purchased just about anywhere guns and/or ammunition is sold. I buy my stuff at a place in Beloeil, Quebec called SAIL.

The muriatic acid I got from Home Hardware was around 30%. I cut it to 10% (3 parts water, 1 part acid) for bigger parts where I might not be able to rinse as quickly as I would like.

For small parts, I use full strength(30%). Pour a bit of acid in a plastic or glass measuring cup and drop the parts in. Bluing is gone instantly. Pour off acid and rinse throughly in water and baking soda.

Do this outside wearing rubber gloves and avoid the fumes - breathing them is hard on the lungs.

If you're going to Canadian Tire just buy EVAPO-RUST. It's sold as a rust removal agent and so, of course, it strips blueing too. As a bonus it's totally non corrosive to skin, doesn't attack the steel, it's safe to breathe the fumes and environmentally friendly. We use it at work all the time. Great stuff. Query the tradename and you can probably find the manufacturer's web site. Lots of info there too.

And it's the best rust removal agent I've ever used.

Staight acid from Crappy tire for me.

I use gooles, gloves and pliers to remove the part from the acid and place the part in water. I then put the acid back the container for re-use.

I've been using the same acid for 2 years....
