What would be the correct finish to put on the stock of SMLE No. 1 Mk.III? I tried a recipe gleaned off one of the Lee sites consisting of Bee Wax, Boiled Linseed Oil and Turpentine. The finish is dull which is OK with me but is it the correct finish to have? The stock was shiney before cleaning like somone had put a varathane on it and was in very rough shape. Looks pretty good now.

Keep rubbing, it takes a long time to get that lovely semi-gloss glow. Make sure to allow the linseed to dry between coats(a week is nice) & use a little at a time & rub with the palm of your hand. After a while you will start to stick you head in the ole gun locker to get a hit off the linseed&hoppes bong. Enjoy!

"...a varathane on it..." Track bubba down and do something nasty to him. Plain old BLO will do nicely. There's really no need for a mixture.

Like Desporteriser said...Keep rubbing, and rubbing...and rubbing....
It will give you a nice shine and bring back memories of your teen years.

Don't know that these stocks had what you would call a finish when made. They were treated with BLO, but no one at the factory spent any time lovingly rubbing them down. No harm in using BLO, beeswax, etc. If you are interested in preserving the original character of the piece, you don't want to apply any civilian style finish. Clean, BLO'd wood is probably the most authentic treatment.
