Hello, I was wondering what the correct rubber recoil pad would be for a old browning safari grade in a magnum? I've looked online at the gunsinternational site and have found two different styles. I was thinking maybe either style is correct as the pictures that I do find seem to be one or the other with no consistancy between the years.

This style is the same as on my 1959 dated 300h&h mag

And this one is the same as my 1971 dated 300win mag

Can anybody confirm if one or the other is correct for these rifles?

Thanks, Joel

Would love to see some pics of that rifle, I have a 59 in 30.06, wicked action!!! Not too many people have old safaris, no recoil pad on mine. Good Luck on your search!

I have a few of the old browning fn rifles in 458, 375h&h,3006 etc. Some of the custom gun makers in the US have old stock browning recoil pads for restoration of these rifles.

Limbsaver should have a pre-fit size for your rifle. (Check their template page)
On a side note: Have you lifted the action out of the stock on your 1971 300?
Between 1966 & 1971 Browning used salt cured wood for their stocks which
resulted in many badlly rusted guns. It's a good idea to check your rifle out
thoroughly for evidence of salt wood damage before spending any extra dough
on it.

Yes the stocks have been off all of them and only one stock is questionable. No signs of rust on the barrel or receiver but the butt plate screws and around the crossbolts have some signs of corrosion. I'm having a smith check it out if it is a salt cured stock or just stored in a humid environment.

But nobody has said if both of these styles of buttpads are correct or if one may be a replacement. I'm not having an issue of replacing one, I just want to confirm it's originality.

I'll try to get some pictures up of mine when I'm home.

Thanks, Joel

"...correct rubber recoil pad..." They're fitted to the rifle.
"...confirm it's originality..." Not many hunters care about that. Very few hunting rifles ever have collector value.
"...no consistancy between the years..." There wouldn't be. All Manuacturer's techniques have changed over the years. Same idea as pre and post 64 Winchesters.

I saw a truck today with a browning emblem on the back window.....so what does that mean?

Any pad could be "fitted" so no help there,
I guess I'm one of 'not many'
No consistancy between the two patterns in the whole 15ish years of production. Seemed that either style was available from start. (Even pre and post64 winchesters had specific buttpads and plates that were used. And that has been a long run of rifles)

Just asking. Do you have one of these rifles and can you tell me if it looks like this style.

I don't know how much more specific I could be.
