I just purchased a byf 44 k98k off of SFRC's used gun sale that has had the stock sporterized. I don't have the rifle yet, but want to start looking for a correct stock and bands to restore the rifle. From what I can gather it is an early 1944 production rifle.

What markings and style of bands would work? Would a stock without the takedown disc work?

Any info and help appreciated.

It all depends on the letter block (a-z) of your serial number, whether its early or late 1944. That will determine the type of bands as well as the stock, but it won't be a flat butt plate. Let us know the letter.

If it's just for a shooter, any K98 stock with a flat or cupped buttplate will work as well as the kreigs stock without the takedown disk.

I've seen them with all milled parts and either solid or laminated stocks. I think that by 1944, Mauserwerke was using whatever they could get.

I've even seen a few with stamped bands and triggerguard/floorplates.

Then of course, you have to consider that the receiver was built into a rifle at at later date or immediately after machining and polishing. There are so many factors here that just about any configuration will work.

The biggest thing is that it did leave the factory with all mathching numbers. No matter how you put it back together, it will still be a refurb/clone. Not that it's a bad thing. Do it. It will still be a great representative example of a very decent rifle.

Just realize that you will never make it into what it was when it was new.

I realize it will never be 100% original again, but would like to restore it to as close as possible. I tried to get the letter from SFRC, but was told there wasn't one. Once I receive the rifle, I will update with the letter block.

What would some correct waffenamts be? WaA135 for the stock?

Yes likely 135 for the stock. Thats if there is any Waa by 1944. Stock would only be serialed in channel. Not that this matters for yours. I think that in 1944 most byf K98s were stamped metal parts. Try Marios K98 stocks for wood. I know that there is a sheet metal trial rifle from 42, and by 44 BYF was supplying other firms with stamped parts like TG and FP. Dou for instance.

Thanks CanadianAR. I've tried contacting Mario k98 but have had no reply. Have you dealt with him before? It looks like he has several stocks that would fit the bill.

From what I've read, it may or may not have the WaA135 waffenamt. Some sources say that the late model stocks don't have the marking and others say Mauser Oberndorf used the waffenamt right up to the end of the war.

I think mario takes a few days to reply. I also not sure if he has any 135 stocks. I heard from another guy he was out. IiId wait to hear this from mario though.
Collectors guild also has some stocks for sale.
And Rguns in the US has stocks, not sure if they'll ship to canada though.

It should have a WaA on the stock. The BYF 44 is the most common K98k encountered and they were still doing things by the book at that point.

I have the badest of experiance with Mario Kabalt. I purshace 3 stocks lately from him and he daclared a value of over 2000 euros for the package. This leave me with a custom fees of close to 700$ and he diden't want to help me at all. After several unanswer e-mail he finaly answer me that his job was done, the fees are my problem. !!!! Very god way to deal with clients !!!!!!
One of the stock have a fake waffenampt and they are all strip of their original finish. They seems to be litely sanded and a coat of clear shallack as been apply.

I will never deal with this guy again:ar15::ar15::ar15:
I never step on anybody that was close to be a jerk on e-bay or here on CGN but his guy his very close to be one, Thats my 0.02$

You have to deal with Customs on that one.
I ordered a book from the US and the value was $100 and the declaration showed $1000. You have to overpay the wrong value because you only have a few weeks before your parcel gets returned to sender. Basically you appeal the decision with Customs and send them proof of the transaction (receipt, advertisement, ebay ad, etc...) and they issue you a refund. Takes a few weeks but you get charged the right amount.

Yeah Coyote, you are 100% right. I called the custom and they tell me to do exactly that.

My problem in this case is that Mario coulden't care less about his client (me). I give him good money for the stocks and he diden't answer me and went he did, he just confirmed me that he dosent care.

I just want to push the alert button on him in this tread.
Us, gun enthousiast and collector put a lot of time in our passion and a lot of money. I am just lived to see someone take adventage of this passion just to make money and dont care at all in wath happen after the package is send.

I bet that if a dealer like Trade Ex or Marstar or Westrifle act like this ( they absolutely not) you will tread on their way to act like crazy. I taught you all be glad that someone told you before falling in the trap.

A lot of guys on other boards have had luck with him. I have personally never dealt with him.
His stocks aren't original, they went through the norweigian rework process. But they are pretty close.

This is from a f block byf 44.

a byf 44 may also have kriegsmodell type stock like this also. this is a byf 45 however. crappy pic of the bands but you can get the idea of the lack of bandspring and no bayonet lug. very few serial #'s on the kriegsmodell compared to the non kriegsmodell type byf 44 above.

BUT a kreigs stock will cost you $500 to $800 if you can find one. Late rifles are really popular to restore because of the few numbered parts.
