This little gem bears repeating every now and again for the new people. After a shooting session using military ammo, whether it is supposedly "corrosive" or not, swab the barrel with a product called FLUID FILM. It contains lanolin (sp?). I know the traditionalists and good ole boys will tell you you have to clean the barrel the old British military way, by sticking the barrel in boiling water and pulling the water up and down the barrel, then running around outside the barn three times bare naked, but this stuff works and is a LOT less hassle. I have an ugly old M48 that sees only nice corrosive 8mm ammo. After a session, I run a couple of swabs of FLUID FILM up and down the barrel, then a clean rag or two. The barrel is not the best in the world, but has not got any worse in ten years of ugly ammo. This rifle has sat for months without corroding, nor have I ever used the hot water method in it. (I just hate the thought of running around the barn in the winter!
) FLUID FILM is usually available at farm and auto supply places. Gun shops don't seem to stock it. I guess the idea of having farmer oil work on a gun is too mind-boggling. It does smell a bit, but doesn't choke you like some of the other potions. kjohn
