I would like some help, as I am a newbie here. What is the difference between corrosive and non-corrosive ammunition? I want to get myself an sks (from s.i.r.) for plinking but am slightly concerned as the term corrosive always seems to imply something bad! Is one type of ammunition prefered or more sought after than the other?

Corrosive ammo means the primer leaves salt deposits in the barrel after being fired. If you don't clean your barrel properly, and semi-soon after shooting, it'll start to rust.

If you're really lazy and like spending too much on 7.62x39 ammo, then buy non-corrosive.

If you like cheap ammo (for now), buy corrosive. Just make sure to clean your barrel and action thoroughly with boiling water or Hopps #9 the same day as your shooting, preferably as soon as you get home.

I use windex to clean my sks. The ammonia neutralizes the salts. I spray it down the barrel, into the gas system and over the bolt head. I then do a couple pull throughs with windex swabs. Then maybe dry or lightly oiled patches. Easy and works well.

I use a boresnake with some windex up from and some G96 on the brush for a fast clean up. Then just a quick windex spray and wipe-down of the boltface and gas piston.

I use the oiler that came with the rifle to hold windex and the cleaning tools on the SKS right after shooting to keep the rust in check. Once I get home it gets the full strip down and cleaning.

The cleaning process for the SKS seems interesting to me as well. You guys all say to clean the gun to keep the rust in check etc ( I clean my guns after a good day of shooting). But a few other people I know of say the gun works even better if you don't clean it at all:eek: , and they use the s.i.r. surplus ammo. Whats up with that???

hmm.. for people who don't clean the gun at all, dissassemble the rifle and take a look at the gas return piston. Chances are it's rusted to hell.

I forgot to clean mine after shooting once, and ended up with a nice thin layer of rust.

It may work without cleaning, but it will work better with. I assume that slowly accuracy and reliability will decrease the more you shoot it without cleaning, due to the gas system and barrel getting gummed up over time...

Cheers,
Alex

I would think that if you shoot it every day or two the rust would never have a chance to dig in , so it really wouldn't matter . If you leave the rifle for a week or two between shooting it , it will eventually become a rusty pile of junk that will seize up when you need it .
In short , shooting corosive will not matter as long as you clean your rifle .

The ammonia doesn't "neutralize" the salts, the salts are soluble just like the ammonia, the water that windex contains dissolves the salts. The ammonia works on any copper you have in your bore.

You can take some very hot soapy water and use that to rid the salts aswell. Windex does work, so does water.

jamie mangrum did a neat little experiment when he still had his surplusrifle.c om website up. as we could've guessed, even if you leave your gun caked in salt, it will not rust if there isn't enough humidity in the air. so in africa, corrosive or non- corrosive makes no difference. the key factor is air humidity. of course, we have enough of it here to rust the crap out of the sks gas piston, piston tube, op rod, op rod housing... those areas need simply be washed with water to get the salts out. simple as that. once i forgot to di it as soon as i got home and the gas piston was caked with rust. ever since, i give it a quick wash in the sink with hot water and soap and no worries. the czech surplus sorrosive ammo thats out there now is an amazing deal at 17 cents per round as opposed to 50 cents for american eagle or whatever. just my 2c
