Hi guys,

Is there a sticky here that gives the definitive method on removing cosmoline? I've heard that soaking the metal parts in boiling water works. What about for the wooden stocks?

Boilling water work but i also like break cleaner or carb cleaner. For wood, i wipe down with a cloth and soapy water. Dont use solvent on wood as may damage the finish.

Hi. Cosmoline removal has been discussed many times. However, cosmoline is just thick petroleum jelly. Any degreaser will do. Plain Varsol works well and doesn't cost much.
Take off the stock and drop the whole thing, including the stock, in a tub/vat/container of it and leave it for 24 hours. Then clean it, oil the metal and BLO(Boiled Linseed Oil) the stock. A few thin coats of BLO works best. Not one thick coat.

spray the stock with ammonia until all the oil and grease "runs out" and then wash with soap and hot water. Let dry for many days and add marine grade linseed oil.

Use a solvent for the metal. And for the love of God...do not use a dishwasher.
