Crappy tire has those little steam sharks on sale so I picked one up. Works like a charm, just got a greased Garand, 2 hours later she has a show room shine on her that suprised me. Well worth the $40. Used to boil all the parts, that works too but is much more of a pain in the butt.

I use a version called a HOT SHOT and it's great for removing cosmo. You can use it on wood just keep the steam jet moving and don't let it concentrate on one area too long unless you are trying to raise the grain or remove dents--it works great for that too.

I've heard horror stories of cosmoline but I've been fortunate in not seeing it bad. I found that brake cleaner(any auto parts store) pretty much dissolves cosmo and blasts it off the gun.

It is 5 bucks a can, so if you've got a bunch of rifles to do it'd be probably cheaper to buy a steamer.

I know a guy who accidently shot the dishwasher :) Brake cleaner works well.... but that #### has some nasty chemicals... remember to have good ventalation... and use chemical resistant gloves.
