i heard about using a steamer to melt off cosmoline, but would a heat gun work equally as well if not better?

The shops that had to deal with that a lot used a vapour degreaser, sort of a cross between a varsol bath and a dishwasher.

Solvent wash for the metal parts, wipe as much off the wood as you can and use a oil absorbent material and heat to clean that.

I just fill the kettle with water...wait for it to boil.... and your away to the races.

Don't use this method on the wood stocks.
