I'm going to be going away for several months and would like to wipe my milsurp stuff down with gobs of cosmo(sounds crazy, eh? normally we all try to get the gunk off!). I've heard you can buy it in pails or something, anyone know where to get it? Alternate suggestions for long term milsurp storage would be appreciated too, I'd love to hear how you mummified your prizes for a year or so!

Vaseline works just as well or bearing grease if you can handle the sulfur smell. You can also buy a spray on corrosion protector from the auto parts store.

Milsurps arn't like Twinkies with an expiry date!
Are you planning on burying them under the lake?
They won't rot in your gun safe or cabinet unless the roof leaks.

haha! No, no burying or sinking going on. I've just heard horror stories about people leaving thier guns, even wet with oil, only to return months later to find rust here and there. I want to come home to my firearms in the exact same condition as I left them. Cosmo has worked for the world's armies for a long time, it seemed like a natural choice. That's not looking real likely, though, unless you guys take up a cosmoline collection for me:D I am seriously considering a light coat of bearing grease for the bores and the metal bits, maybe wrapped in wax paper...how will the wood keep without maintenance? silica gel in the gun safe? The only other alternative is finding a surrogate gunnut to take them while I'm gone, and I don't trust anyone to not bubba my guns:p

Best thing is to buy a 50 gal drum of vaseline, put a camp stove under it and get it boiling, then dip the guns in - works every time, and it never hurts to have extra vaseline around

Brownell's sells cosmoline. Four pounds runs $29.60 US plus shipping, if they'll ship it to you. However, regular gun grease will do nicely. Or just a good coat of oil. Several months isn't long enough to warrant a heavy greasing. Then just store the rifles in a dry place with a relatively consistent temperature.
