Hi all:

I wonder if anyone can give me an idea what kind of cost difference there is between loading .308 long-distance loads and .338 Lapua mag?

I reload .308 now, and with decent brass (pretty much a one-time cost), powder (say, Varget), and a good bullet (I use Sierra Match King 168s or 175s for 308) I think I come out somewhere around a dollar a round, depending how good of a deal I get on various components. Not certain of that, but it feels like about that area, maybe less.

Anyone doing 338 Lapua got a feel for what it's costing?

Thanks!

well... bullets are a little more.... Sierra 250gr Matchking is $35- $40 per 50 a box as compaired to .308.
Powder and primers are similar
Brass is about $1.40 - $2 ea.

So.. the long and short of it is the Brass is the major expense seconded by bullets.... dies are around the $70 - $125 mark also more than the usual $50 for good .308 dies.

Just my 2 cents..

I just checked some prices from Hirsch Precision -

.338 Lapua brass - $300.00/100
.308 Winchester brass $57.75/100

.338 250 gr match bullet - $67.00
.308 185 gr match bullets - $34.00

Also, the .338 Lapua uses over 100 grs of powder compared to 40 grs for the .308 so for rough figuring, you get less than 70 rounds of .338 from a pound of powder, compared to 175 .308's

Thanks Boomer, forgot to mention that your using more powder in the .338 ;)

Also looks like is been awhile since I bought Brass and bullets.... (thank God for buying in bulk :D)
