Cost of brass?

Hey all,

I'm looking into beginning to re-load my own ammo. I'm trying to estimate the cost to get started.

What is the going rate on average for new .308 casings? Price for once fired .308 brass?

Likewise for .303 and .338?

I'm hoping there are some old hands on here that could steer me into the price range of what I'm going to get myself into :D
 
For the .308 you can get good quality Lapua brass for $73 a hundred. If you treat your brass properly you can get up to 40 reloads per case. That works out to about 2 cents per firing. It will be your cheapest component.

Is this for hunting,plinking, or are you gonna get into target shooting?
I have a pile of once fired Doninion brass that I'll never use.
 
If Brass is costly buy cheap ammo shoot it and then use the brass, used brass here on the forum is going way higher than I would pay. IE $10 for 20 fired cases, or 19.95 for 20 loaded rounds(just an example). There is also quite a few people who just leave there brass behind at the gun club, in a range bucket etc.

Wow. I never realized how much money it actually saves you :eek:

I also have picked up other peoples brass and hoarded it. I'm conservative in nature and re-loading always seemed like something I would end up doing lol.

Time to get set up for business I think :D

Check the EE for 1f brass. I bought 100 1f .308 Norma from a fellow CGN'er for $55 shipped to my door. Kinda hard to beat that price. Might have to do a bit of digging, but the EE is the best place to start imo.
 
I will only go new brass anymore, I purchased some "once fired" in excellent condition.:rolleyes:I discarded much of it.


New stuff I know exactly what has been done to it.

I buy new, fire form it then it's off to the races!
 
I'll send you some .308 brass (mostly remington & some winchester) if you pay shipping from Kingston. I'll be home mid March on leave for a couple weeks.
 
beware of dominion and imperial brass as the necks will split on the first factory firing. there is some good once fired brass around if you take the time too look about and dont pay the very high prices some people are asking for common calibres.
 
A friend of mine goes to a popular spot out in the bush to shoot. I went with him to do some target shooting as well and lo and behold very few people pick up their brass.
I collected a whole wack of .308 Norma, .30-06, even .375 H&H!!
I'm still debating getting set up for reloading or not. The price is definitely right from what you guys are telling me. Time to do some in depth research I think :D
 
Winchester 308, new brass is $39/100 at Bass Pro or WS Sports. Nearly free when you figure how oftern you can re-use it and you don't have to worry about the size of the last chamber it was fired in.

I hear you! I am very weary now of "ONCE FIRED" I got a load of 500 pcs and threw most of them away as well. The once fired, never reloaded brass had the tooling / die marks in the casings from being resized as well as chamfered / deburred. The guy insisted he never reloaded it... in th end it came out that he had bought it third hand from someone or so he said. Buyer beware!!!

Well you can go with Lapua .308 or spend almost the same amount on other brands.Not to mention the extra case prep you may need to do on the other brands.

If you look around you can find some decent prices. I grabbed a bag once of 7mm-08 at a local shop it was $37.99 plus tax for 50!!!!What was I thinking??

IMO might as well spend a little more now than a lot later.

I agree.

I pickup lots of brass from the range I shoot at. Any of the stuff I want, I keep and use. The rest I just give it away. I've even given away some brass on here a few times provided people pay the shipping.
