So I have been contemplating building an AR for a while. But I would like to get an Idea of the cost first. I was gonna do one major part or parts pack per pay. My plan was to get a RRA Stripped Lower, and build the lower, while purchase a complete upper. How much am I looking at? From what I found the prices are:

Stripped lower: $250
Parts Kit: $130
A2 stock: $125
upper in 20": No clue.

I was thinking of a stag upper but I am new at this so I am utterly clueless.

What Am I missing?

I'm sure lots of people here will disagree but if you can buy close to what you want buy as a stock rifle just buy it. Make a few changes to personalize it. My guess would be that it would be cheaper in the long run. If it is something more custom it might be worth while piecing it together.

This is solid advice. Reducing the amount of "I don't wants" from a stock rifle will save you money and time. As for the upper in 20" you're looking at around $1000. This price is the going rate(give or take) for most uppers these days. As for total cost of the rifle, the sky is the limit.

Well, the reason I wanted to build one was because I do not have $1500 to drop on one right now, but I can afford to buy each part every few weeks as I get paid.

You're pretty much bang on with your prices (above)... the 20" upper with BCG, Charging Handle (complete upper half) should run you about $1,000 to $1,200 depending on construction, features, brand.

Only thing that's not on your list is the sights/optics and cost there is anything from $80 to sky's the limit on scopes, etc..

Biggest problem these days is supply. Lots of stripped lowers right now... parts kits are short supply. Stocks are not that hard to find (we have some). Uppers are not easy to find... suppliers just can't make enough to meet US demand these days. We waited nearly 6 months for these 20" and are still waiting for a bunch of other models.

This should give you a good idea on what you're looking at for overall costs though.

I would look for a complete upper and a complete lower and buy those seperatley then. I don't think I would bother piecing together the lower. You will probably end up spending more that way.

this isnt exactly what your looking for but it was just kickin around here a couple of days ago and i bookmarked it so http://www.ar15builder.com/ just copy and paste or what have you and you can build whatever AR your heart desires. its from brownells, but its awsome i spent more than an hour playing on it. if nothing else its a good way to kill some time. hopefully this could help you with some parts or prices

good luck, give us some updates as you go and lets see some finished overalls.

I'd save up the pennies and just buy in one whole piece then. Buying in parts is good and all but you also have factor in shipping each part individually as opposed to a single shipment. You might negate any cost savings by building if you just buy little by little.

I think most of the replies here are sound, but nobody mentioned buying piece by piece in the EE as deals come up.

If you're not in a hurry, you could shave some dollars off your total that way.

As silverado said I've bought all my ARs thru this site. First from AEI(stag) the second was whole and the third I bought the top then the bottom at different times when I could afford it

Ya, except you tend to spend more on parts when you buy one at a time, at least I did. It seems when I am not in a hurry I buy top quality parts, better then I need at times.

It's the way to go, but it MAY end up costing you more.

I built my AR15 off of the EE and through dealers on here and the odd item for under $100 from Brownells.
