I ran into a friend at the range today who claimed to have a 20 rd box of Winchester John Wayne .32-40 ammo and that it is currently valued at $150/box. I find that a bit extreme. Comments?

Seems a little pricey IMHO ,although folks will pay good prices if they really want something. This ammo has not been out of production all that long ,and will bet there is plenty of it stashed away.

I saw an auction where the seller had 1 box of each in 45 Colt ,30-30 and 44-40 and wanted $165.00 US(for all 3) buy it now ,but I think the winning bid was $ 146.00

Collectors who pay good cash, want the box in mint condition ,as the silver finish scratches very easily.

I myself have several full boxes of 30-30 and .45 Colt ,blasted off a few boxes of each and have a few for old time sake.

Cheers

I've had people at the range tell me bricks of Winchester Wildcats are "valued" at $150 in the US because of the shortages. You will find the occasional auction for ridiculous prices but that doesn't mean that's any sort of average selling price. Too often people will see one specific auction where someone sets a ridiculous selling price and they assume that's the going rate.

Over on gun broker in the US there is a box of John Wayne 32-40 ammo for $75, another for $60, and another for $62 and none of them have sold yet; some with only 8 hours left so they where posted days ago. There is one lot of 6 boxes for $380 ($63/each) that likewise hasn't sold. If those where really good prices they would be snatched up really quick; not sit around on an auction site collecting digital dust.
