I recently bought a basic 10/22 and now carry it instead of my savage 17hmr.
There have been a few posts claiming that the 17hmr ammo is cost prohibitive compared to 22lr.
I disagree.
Although per round the 22 is much cheaper, I am spending more money on ammo. In the last week, I've shot 7 skunks, 1 badger, 1 raccoon, and several gophers. I've gone through dozens of rounds with the 22. Had I been using my 17hmr it would have cost me a fraction of the 17hmr by using far fewer rounds.
I am having alot more fun though.

if you had gone thru as many rounds as i have in the last 3 summers shooting gophers. i think you would have mortgaged your vehicle. average of 10,000 rounds a year. think of the cost for the same in 17. You may shoot more rounds of .22 but have 3 x the fun for the same or more costs.

Out of necessity or pleasure...just shoot and have fun with it...just be thankful your not shooting a .50 BMG...although that would probably be pretty awesome! If it's a huge impediment financially, look for bulk deals and stock up.

500 rounds of .22 is about the same as 50-75 of .17 hmr around here. Under 100 yards I shoot the .22. Beyond 100 if I want to be sure I hit what I'm aiming at I use the .17 hmr.

50 BMG plinking ammo isn't that expensive since the US opened up exports. ;) (reloaded with cheap components).

But they you also don't run through a couple bricks of ammo in an afternoon as with a 22.

If you got more time than money shoot 22lr if you have more money than time shoot 17hmr. If your mom buys your ammo than 22lr is for you!! jk and a lol!

When i got the ruger out i will light up a patch of grass that i seen a gopher run into and wait for the splat! With the 17hmr i just get into a story with a buddy and look for another one to pop up.

Exactly my point...lol. But it's the best of both worlds!

I've never had a decent 22 before this 10/22. I bought the .17 because i like to see gophers blow up rather than scurry down the hole to die....or not. Good thing the .17hmr is a bolt.
