Cost on remmy 870?

Hey all, i just had a question on the cost of a used 870? I am a noob when it comes to shotguns and i was also wondering what is the range of shell length that you can fire from a gun or do you need to buy separate barrels for say a 3" shell as a pose to a 2 3/4" shell? I like the idea of an old school pump and would like to know as much as possible about them so i can take the best care of mine and be able to mod it or change parts for it if i need to. Also a question about choke tubes. I am ashamed to ask this but what is the purpose of a choke tube and how come there are so many that you can put in one gun? thank you for your time and all info is greatly appreciated.

I would suggest buying a new 870 because it is not an expensive gun. I paid $360 after taxes (from Lebaron's). The remmy 870 express magnum will accept 2 3/4" and 3" shells whereas the remmy 870 express super magnum will accept up to 3 1/2" shells.

Choke tubes determine the size of your shot pattern. What did they teach you in your safety course?:p

hahahaha i havent even taken the safety course yet. Hopefully i will take it soon. Stupid small town needs enough ppl to take the course and buddy took it already when i was out of town. CURSES!! So if you change choke tubes, you can change the diameter of the pattern of shot? like make it smaller or increase it?
