I have a Remington 700 in 243 that my father in-law gave me that I'm not having any luck getting it to shoot. 2' groups! I'm still going to do some messing with it. But was wondering worst case if I rebarrel it with a take off barrel or ream it out to 7mm08 what would the costs be. I'm in alberta. Would like to keep the rifle because it was family rifle.
Thanks
Brad

Have a gunsmith inspect it and get his opinion. It could be as simple as cleaning the barrel, bedding the action, floating the barrel, adjusting the trigger, and making sure the mounts and scope are good ...

or it could be shot out and need a new barrel.

As gun tech says there are lots of things you can do to try to improve the existing rifle. If it is truly a dud it may well be a dud after rebarreling.

I might be understanding this wrong, but you wanna get a 243 take off and re-chambered to 7mm-08? That won't work.

As stated you should try the obvious before taking it apart and re-barrel. Ammo may also be the problem.

Erm... .243 bullet diameter is .243", and a 7mm-08 bullet is .284", I believe? Like others have said, you'd have to bore out the old .243 rifling, and then re-cut the rifling and chamber for 7mm.

I would think this would hardly be worth it, even if it were to not be cost prohibitive (Which I'm guessing it would be)

Ill clarify. Cost to Ream AND rebore 243 barrel to 7mm08 cost vs spinning on a take off 08 barrel.
I've tried different ammo, redone mounts and rings installed reliable scope. Still have lots of tinkering to do. Want to get barrel looked at with bore scope. Will free float, and bed it. But it wouldn't hurt my feelings if it was an 08 rather than a 243.

Just as an FYI to cover all bases.....I had the same issue with an old Stevens .243. I ended up recutting the crown on my lathe to get it to reshoot accurately although I bedded it also.

Also if it's wood stocked, sometimes refinishing(resealing so moisture doesn't warp it daily)can improve accuracy.

Hard to be consistent when the stock warps and isn't the same two days in a row.

Let me piggyback on this thread...

I've got a Remington 700 VTR in .223

If I wanted to have it modified to shoot .308 is that possible? Is it an expensive undertaking?

You'd be best off to buy a 308 and keep or sell the 223.

Yupp. Sell the 223 and buy a 308 if thats what you want. A new barrel will run $500, plus the cost of getting it installed.

To the OP, i think you would be best served with a new barrel if you want to go 7mm08. I can't imagine reboring a barrel would be cheaper than a new barrel, and your install cost should be the same because they'd have to take off the current barrel to bore it out, then reinstall it.

You might be able to get a Remmy 7mm-08 Take-off from the EE, then you get the barrels swapped by a gunsmith. That would be the cheapest option. But the new barrel might be shot as well, you never know what you are getting with take-offs.

Have the gun pillar bedded /free floated ,if you're keeping it anyways and the crown looked at.Shoot it again from a bench with proper rest.If it still won't preform re-barrel to anything in the .308 family....a smith with a bore scope would be handy.....Harold

You can swap the barrel yourself without any machining.

Just do a "Remage" conversiom. Tools =~125, barrel and nut 285-400. I think Mystic Precision sells the Mcgowen brand barrel to convert.

Or go the gunsmith route with the shoulder cut back and headspaced/fitted

Cost to Ream AND rebore 243 barrel to 7mm08 cost vs spinning on a take off 08 barrel.

I believe the last time I asked Ron Smith about reboring, it was about $350 (that was a few years back so don't quote me).
A takeoff can be bought on the EE from $50-150 - install should be $100-150 I would guess.

2 foot groups, or 2 inch groups? You have 2' (foot) in the first post there.
2 foot groups... either the barrel has no rifling left, or your scope is dead.
2 inch groups isn't great for a .243 but should be easily improved without too much effort if the gun is sound.

Ya its 2 feet. Never had a rifle shoot Like this. Going to redo rings bases again with 3rd scope. And shoot in tomorrow or next day. The thing with it being out so much is the only thing I can see being problem is the barrel or scope I've tried a 2nd scope and same but there is nothing obvious in the barrel either. (That I can see )
Thanks for all the input Brad
