I have a Parker Hale 243 with a bulged barrel...what would be a reasonable amount for a gunsmith to charge to put a new barrel on it? I asked one company online and was quoted $700 ? That seems really high to me?

Rebarreled my Sako was about $800.

$400 for the barrel, $400 to contour, thread, chamber/crown. Unless its sentimental, cheaper to buy a new win m70 or ruger 77, and sell the Parker to someone who wants the action.

Thanks fellas, I kind of figured maybe 2-3 as a new rifle can be picked up for the 7-8 range!! It also might be an option to cut off a 1" 1/2 or so and recrown?

If we end up selling it for the action, what would a fellow expect it to be worth? I am just trying to make a decision here as I've already invested a fair bit just finding PH high rings. :-(

Parker Hales used military 98's as well as commercial 98 actions.. one is worth more... they also came with various bottom metal and wood.

Sometimes cheaper barrels are available but when you are talking about $700 you are talking about match quality barrels... and it does not really matter what action you put one of those on.. it costs the same...

Don't no where your located but recently had a weatherby 300 shortened 1" and a muzzle brake added at Epps in Orillia for a hundred bucks

If it were something current production, e.g. from Savage or Remington, you might get a new factory barrel or a take-off from someone's project and it would be much cheaper, but the quote sounds reasonable for getting a blank supplied and fitted to an old Parker Hale like that.

Fortunately if the bulge is close enough to the muzzle to leave enough barrel, the cut and re-crown is quite reasonable.

If that doesn't work out, let me know how much you "invested" in the PH high rings. I can use another set so if I can afford them I'll be interested.

Ian Robertson just installed a Ultra-Match Tru-Flite 1/7 t barrel on my friends 223 rem
cost $425 + $250 instalation I asked if after he shot .071" group, do you think Ian,s work and a Match barrel are worth it.

In a heart beat he replyed

Ron Smith will install one of his barrels on any "simple" action (Rem 700 for example) for just over $600, and a little more for anything that requires the barrel to be milled, such as for an extractor slot (Model 70, Mausers etc) . They're the best barrels money can buy.

Thanks for the information guys, I'll have to see if cutting it down is a viable option or just get a new rifle I guess as I don't feel it's worth that much of an investment for a replacement barrel!
