I'm after a heavy 300WM barrel for my Savage rifle. I can get a really good deal on a heavy 308 barrel take off for my Savage, would it make any sense to buy a 308 bbl and get it rechambered for 300WM? Otherwise it looks like I'd have to order a custom bbl to get a heavy 300WM barrel.

The savages are very esy to rechamber because of the barrel nut.
If it is a heavy barrel, there should be no sweat to get it rechambered in 300 mag.
If you ahve the headspace guages the gunsmith doesn't even need the rifle.
Chamber ot to factory specs and bolt 'er up.....

Yes, I plan to get a headspace guage so that I can swap barrels myself, if desired. Take off's just don't seem that common in 300WM heavy bbl, if they ever made any. But 308 heavy is much more common.

Cat, do you do bbl swaps on savage's?

Yes, its currently a 300WM with the sporter weight barrel. I'm planning to switch over to a laminate target stock and want a heavier bbl to go with it. I'd consider simply installing a 308 heavy bbl, but I'm not sure what problems I'd run into with the long action and feeding from the 300WM magazine.

Caliber change sounds like its more trouble than its worth, unless you just want it to function as a single shot. Just perusing the internet, it looks like the fee to cut a chamber is around $100. That sounds appealing if I can get the heavy 308 bbl for the price I believe I can.

"...make any sense to buy a 308 bbl and..." It'd be less fuss to find a .300 mag(Win Mag as opposed to Weatherby, right?) barrel.

Can anyone tell me where I can get a heavy 300 Winmag barrel for a Savage at a reasonable cost? It looks to me like my only option is custom made and that's pretty pricey.

Converting from a .308 to a .300 mag will take a bit more than just a simple chamber reamer. The magnum's case is .605" longer and .043" bigger at the belt. The length is the primary issue. It's not impossible though, but you're looking at a custom chambering job. You'd have to find a smithy who has the reamers too. If he has to buy them, you pay for it and don't get to keep them.
Out of idle curiosity, why do you want a heavy barreled .300 mag? Long range target shooting?

Yup, for my own rifles, but I have a set of guages and bolt heads.

It would be neither difficult nor expensive to rechamber a 308 barrel to 300 Win Mag. Regards, Bill.

I bought the rifle for hunting. I have as yet to shoot a deer with it. Last deer was at 50 paces with a 308. I figured it would be good for those 300-400 yard shots as it would be flatter shooting and also better for capacity for Moose or Elk. Didn't have a 308 then either.

Now why do I want a heavy barrel for it? To be totally honest, darned if I know. Just have the hankering to put a heavy barrel on it after I put on the target stock. It will still be usable for long shots at deer from a stand, and no doubt a lot more comfortable to shoot with some more heft to the barrel. The light stock and barrel really make the rifle jump at the muzzle. I'm saving my brass and when I have enough to reload, I'll start shooting at targets with it some more. Possibly try some shooting at up to 1000 yards, for the hell of it. Like most of my ideas, somewhat whimsical.

Very simple and shouldn't cost much for a smith to rechamber a heavy .308 barrel and the barrels value will be a little bit more considering the 300 win mag barrels are less common. I'll buy it and rechamber it myself if you don't want it, just let me know who has it. ;)

Cheers,
Rob

Grizzlypeg have a look at shilen barrels if you have not already. They have gotten into making savage take off barrels. And they now ship to Canada they do all the paper work and what not.

Timberwolfe, I think shilen may be the best bet. It doesn't look that bad for a barrel chambered and ready to install. I may well go that route.
