Just curious if this is an inexpensive job?

I’m thinking about a 38 special revolver for IDPA done up to be like an old school police revolver, but the 4.2” max barrel length is a bit of a problem.

I’d imagine as long as there aren’t lug issues then it’s just a shorten, re crown, and new front site?

I’m thinking of a beat up smith or possibly an Alpha Project revolver in 38 or 357 mag.

What model and length do you have? How short do you want it? I am not sure about cutting an existing long barrel less than 4.2"... that would be creating a prohib.

It most certainly would make it a prohib. As far as im aware, you can go from prohib to restricted fine with no real problems. Going from Restricted to Prohib is a no go.

I don't have the revolver yet, I'm doing some research before I start looking for one.

I'm hoping to use the revolver in IDPA but in order to do so I need to keep the barrel length in a tight sweet spot between the 4.17" length minimum set by Canadian firearms law, and the 4.2" maximum set by the IDPA revolver rules. There are Canadian Length 4.2" Ruger and S&W models of revolver out there but they aren't super common, and I'd like to see if it's economically feasible to trim a 6" revolver down to length.

I kind of dig the old school "New York Police" style 38 special Colt Police Positive / Smith and Wesson Model 10 revolvers (blued with with wood grips) and I'd like to mimic that. Honestly, if my handgun doesn't make my pupils dilate (i.e. I get that - this is cool - feeling) then it's likely I'll get tired of it and put it up for sale. It's my failing.

0.030" is very small. I'd wager that if you measured 100 of those "4.2 inch" revolvers, half would vary by that much or more. However they're probably on the long side and not short.

Cutting and crowning a good 6 " down is simple , front sight is where it can cost.
I would just go buy a gun with a 4.2" barrel or 4 1/4", I don't follow the IDPA rules at all. so it has to be a 12-6 gun???????
I have run into 2 smiths with 4 inch barrels that where 106 mm, but that is like winning a lottery
A Dan Wesson would be good one to do up , but cost more to make.
