Hi,

Anyone know if it possible to remove the door on the Costco First Alert Protector 14 gun line of safes?

This is for their 14 gun version and I think the model numbers are one of these: 2743, 6742, or 6741.

The item number given by Costco is 274404?

I called first alert and they have no idea if this is possible.

Thanks in advance.

Marc

any safe can have the door removed. you just need 2 crowbars and maybe a saw.

Ok I should clarify

I mean non destructive removal.

I have to take it down to the basement on my own and want to lighten it.
Can the door be removed and then reinstalled without the use of crowbars, sawzall's and a tig welder :)???

Just a thought, maybe try taking the inside door panel off, and see if that will allow you to access the door mounting bolts. I have never done it, so I do not know if it will work or not, but it might be worth a try.

I have done it many times with older version of the Costco safes. All you need is a good ratchet and and wooden planks to level and hold the door.

Yes!

Wouldn't a dolly and a friend make your life a lot easier. A 14 gun safe is ~300lbs.

Ok so I picked one of these First Alert Protector 14 guns safes from costco today based on a few posters above indicating the door can be removed.

Good news is they were right (thank you) and the door is quite easy to remove once the inner door panel is removed and the molex type connector is disconnected from the back of the digital key pad. Just 4 hinge bolts and off it comes.

Few quick questions to those that own these.

1. Is the key normally difficult to activate? I kind of have to jiggle the key to get it to rotate, and when I first put the key in, the slots rotate until it is fully inserted. FAQ on the first alert site says to use a squirt of wd 40. Anyone tried this and did it help.

2. I removed the door to get ready to take it into the basement, and noticed the activation bars that are attached to the dead bolts, are very jiggly with lots of play. Is this normal? There is no grease whatsoever on the locking bolts or the internal mechanism, should these be lightly greased?

Any info from first hand users is appreciated.

You have to hold your tongue just right for the key to work - but it will work - have not tried WD40 but i will - As far as the activation bars i have not added any grease as it works as it should for me - use decent batteries for the keypad and there are lots of mods for adding light to the inside which really makes a difference. Don't forget the dehumidifier - mini ones work great for me - other people also like other choices - they are all good.

Hello Marc,

Where are you located?
Costco safes haven't been in stock at Costco anywhere around GTA and Southern Ontario for a quite a while now.

Calgary south Costco had 4 of them Saturday. Costco in okotoks said they were expecting 4 as well.

Just over $460 with tax if I recall which is not as good a price as a year ago when I was thinking of getting one, but still not too bad

Thanks guys!
Nothing around here, not that I need one, but my friend does.

I think that I paid around $340 + tax, and I remember that they had them for sale for a short while... for $299 + tax or something close to that.

Price seems to have crept up quite a bit, $100 dollars more now.

Still a good deal, but that is an increase of about 30%... quite a bit!

A shot of silicone lube is what I use on locks. Works great. Doesn't hurt to spray the internal mechanism either. I'm guessing the internal parts have to be fairly loose for the electronic lock to unlock/operate. It is run by a 9V battery.

The activation bars attached to deadbolts have a threaded nut(difficult to tighten) which can fall off, making it impossible to lock up. Look for nut at bottom inside of safe door, nimble fingers and patience required to re-attach.
